What should you pack for a Tanzania safari?

Pack for the route, season, accommodation and transport in your itinerary. Early starts can feel cool, afternoons may be warm, and rain or dust can affect what is useful. Ask your operator for a trip-specific list, especially if your safari includes a small aircraft or a walking activity.

Clothing and footwear

  • Lightweight, comfortable clothing that can be layered for changing temperatures.
  • A warm layer for early starts and higher-altitude areas.
  • A light rain jacket or other rain protection suited to your travel dates.
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes for camp and travel days; ask about footwear if a guided walk is planned.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and clothing that protects you from the sun.
  • Swimwear if your accommodation has a pool.

Neutral colours are often practical for game viewing and photographs, but specialist clothing is not essential. Follow your guide’s advice and local rules for any walking activity.

Sun, health and personal essentials

  • Sun protection and insect repellent appropriate for your needs.
  • Personal prescription medicines in their original packaging, plus any supplies you rely on.
  • Basic toiletries and a small personal first-aid kit.
  • Reusable water bottle if your operator or accommodation recommends one.
  • Travel documents, insurance details, emergency contacts and copies stored separately from originals.

For vaccinations, malaria prevention and other health questions, consult a qualified travel-health professional well before departure. Requirements depend on your circumstances and may change.

Camera and game-viewing gear

Binoculars are useful for observing wildlife at a distance. If you take a camera, pack the equipment you can comfortably manage, spare batteries or charging options, memory cards and a way to protect gear from dust or rain. A long lens can help with distant subjects, but it is not necessary for enjoying a safari.

Pack for your transport

Internal flights on small aircraft may have specific luggage dimensions, weight limits or soft-bag requirements. These vary by airline and route. Ask for the current rules for every flight on your itinerary before packing, and confirm whether camera bags count toward your allowance.

Keep essential medication, travel documents, valuables and items needed during a transfer in your hand luggage. Ask your operator whether laundry is available at your accommodation so you can avoid overpacking.

What you may not need

There is no universal gear list. Avoid buying equipment solely because a generic checklist recommends it. Check what your accommodation supplies, what activities are included, and whether your route has specific needs. If you are unsure about an item, ask the operator to confirm before you leave.

Before you travel

  • Check your itinerary, accommodation and expected weather for each stop.
  • Confirm current baggage rules for scheduled and charter flights.
  • Review entry requirements with the relevant official authority.
  • Keep a small set of essentials accessible in case checked luggage is delayed.
