Don’t Overpack! The Smart and Essential Safari Packing List
Packing for a safari is a unique challenge. You need to be prepared for everything from chilly mornings to hot afternoons, all while adhering to luggage limits. The key is to pack smart, not heavy. Here is the ultimate checklist from our experts.
The Golden Rule: Soft Bag & Neutral Colors
- Soft Duffel Bag: This is non-negotiable. Hard-shell suitcases are difficult to fit into safari vehicles and are not permitted on small domestic flights (like the one to the Serengeti or Zanzibar).
- Neutral Colors: Pack clothes in shades of khaki, green, beige, and brown. They help you blend in with the environment and don’t attract insects. Avoid bright colors, white (it gets dusty instantly), and dark blue/black (which can attract tsetse flies).
Your Safari Wardrobe (Think Layers!)
- 3-4 T-shirts or Polo Shirts: Lightweight and comfortable for midday.
- 2 Long-Sleeved Shirts: Crucial for sun protection during the day and mosquito protection in the evening.
- 1-2 Pairs of Safari Trousers/Pants: Lightweight and durable. Convertible zip-off pants are a great option.
- 1 Pair of Shorts: For relaxing at the lodge (long pants are better for game drives).
- 1 Warm Fleece or Mid-Weight Jacket: Mornings and evenings on the crater rim or in the Serengeti can be surprisingly cold.
- 1 Lightweight Waterproof Jacket: Essential during the green season, but useful year-round for unexpected showers or as a windbreaker.
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: A pair of trainers or sturdy walking shoes is perfect. Heavy hiking boots are usually unnecessary.
- Sandals or Flip-Flops: For wearing around the lodge or camp.
- Pajamas & Underwear
Essential Gear & Accessories
- Binoculars (Crucial!): Don’t leave home without them. A pair for each person is ideal. This is the most important piece of gear you’ll bring.
- Camera, Extra Batteries & Memory Cards: You’ll take more photos than you think. A power bank is also a great idea.
- Sun Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is essential for sun protection.
- Sunglasses & High-SPF Sunscreen
- Insect Repellent (with DEET)
- Basic First-Aid Kit: Include pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, plasters, and any personal medications.
- Headlamp or Small Flashlight: For navigating your tent or lodge at night.
- Copies of Important Documents: Passport, visa, flight details, and travel insurance.
What NOT to Pack
- Drones: They are illegal to operate in all Tanzanian National Parks.
- Plastic Bags: Tanzania has a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags.
- Formal Wear: Safari is a casual affair. Leave the fancy clothes and jewelry at home.
